Glad I found you all!

  • My husband and I just found out yesterday our offer was accepted and we will be the owners of a 5 year old log cabin.  We are ecstatic!  This is a dream come true for sure!  We have a water view of Lake Petenwell in Wisconsin.  It's the 2nd largest lake in WI apparently.  I love Cabin Life magazine and can't wait to get experienced advice from others here.

  • Congratulations on your new log cabin.  You will love it.  I had wanted one since I was in high school in the 1970's.  We finally got ours in 2006 and it was the best thing we ever did.  Sometimes we still have to pinch ourselves.  We like it better than the house we live in.

  • Congrats,

Having a cabin has changed our lives and is the best thing we ever did.  You will relish and live for the days and times you will spend at your new home.

  • I think alot of us "boomers" will gravitate toward a 2nd home, this is a good time to buy.  Can you tell me where I would find "lists" of items to stock at the cabin?  On the day we move in, I want to be prepared, we are having guests that very first weekend!  Grocery store not too close.  Any list of food or items to bring up there would be appreciated.

  • Great idea about the "list of items". I would like to see what people stock as well. I have been a cabin owner for 5 years, and I am still not sure what I need!

  • Congrats on becoming a cabin owner! This is just the beginning to a lifetime of joyful memories! I think I must have made at least 100 lists of what to bring to our first opening. LOL  I just told myself what would I need to get through that first weekend, then I would do inventory. It's a process and don't go crazy trying to get everything at once. We always keep a "cabin bin" at home to fill with items we need for our next trip.

  • I don't think there is any one list that would cover it all.  I do have a suggestion once you get a bit settled that my husband and I find helpful.  He bought a 3 ring binder/folder with a place for a pad of paper.  We call it our 'cabin bible'.  We have a milk crate type of box  that goes with us whether we are going to the cottage or going home.  That folder is always in that box.  Whenever I find something that I run out of or something that needs repair it immediately gets written down in that folder.  In that binder we also have the phone numbers of our neighbors and our favorite restaurant.  We have receipts from utility companies, L.P co., the marina on the lake, the dock co., garbage co., septic co., etc for quick reference.

I did a quick search on "grocery shopping list' that you might find helpful.  One thing that our guests have really commented on is the little basket on the guest room dresser that has samples of shampoo, bar soap, lotion, toothpaste, mouth wash etc.  If you don't want to buy the little samples you can collect them from motels.

    Have a great opening weekend!!!

  • We have a saying around balsam lake wi.   "If they don't have it a Jonzy's, you don't need it".  I'm sure most areas have a store similar to our beloved jonzy's.  It has snacks, dairy products, bait and tackle, gas, newspapers, booze, hardware, frozen pizza, coffee, charcoal ........like i said if they don't have it at your cabin store, you don't need it
