Geese

  • What is the best way to keep geese off my lawn?

  • short term I've heard spreading grape coolaid  (mixed with water) around a perimeter keeps them off.

Rain obviously reduces the effectiveness. Smile

  • Hi Dave,

My neighbor has had the problem of geese visiting him! Here's what he does:

    1. Has a large dog

    2. Has a 'wire' type fence he puts around the perimeter of his lawn when they're away for more than a day. He has simple stakes (like the type that keep the hose in place) and simply runs a single wire around the perimeter. That, he says, works best.

    3. Has small 'flags' that flap in the wind around the corners of his lot. Evidently, geese and other small animals don't like movement.

    Good luck.

  • let your shoreline grow, i have found geese do not leave the water if they have to walk through tall grass and vegetation.

  • balsam is spot on.  When we bought our property the grass was being mowed right to the edge. Evidence of geese everywhere.  We put in a few native plants and stopped mowing 15 feet short of the water.  Our lawn never sees the geese anymore.

Any place you can reduce turf the better.  If you want to keep the turf, plant taller grasses and plants around the turf area so the geese won't feel safe there.  Cut off access to the water from the turf too.  A small path is all we humans need.  You'll also love the butterflies, birds and frogs it brings.
